Hermitage of Bellvitge (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat)
Location:
It is located on the Bellvitge neighborhood, on L'Hospitalet de LLobregat city (Barcelona).
Description and History:
The first news of this chapel dating May 1057, when the land
now occupied by the chapel was sold for 30 ounces gold.
Since these areas were marshy area, it is possible that the idea to
build the chapel of 'Santa Maria de Bellvitge', was to implore divine
protection to counteract the harmful influence of the terrain.
In a document dated October 25, 1279, we find the news 6 monies donated
to the parish of 'Santa Eulalia' to the chapel but really is not until
1372 that specifically mentions the chapel, on the occasion of a
license granted to Perpetual Vicar of Provenzana to celebrate Mass
there.
The January 17, 1493 Barcelona City donated all necessary stones for
the construction of the shrine.
According to 'Ramón Piñol'of the Municipal Institute of History of
Barcelona: "The name had been mentioned by the invocation to the
Virgin, who engaged him in a desire for good trip should take those
routes to roads full of dangers and difficulties."
The relationship between the names 'Malvitge' and 'Bellvitge' (i.e. bad
place and good place, or perhaps more aptly 'bad travel' and 'good
travel'), has served as the basis for formulating the hypothesis that
one coming from the other.
In a report dated September 29, 1765, document destroyed in 1936
because of the Spanish civil war, contained the religious functions
were held in the Chapel. Feast of Our Lady of September the St George's
Day that she was going in procession to the chapel, which was held the
office mentioned the second Whitsun.
The shrine has been restored for the last time in December 2003.
